I Came to the US 18 years ago. I worked hard for long hours in the worst jobs anyone can do, sometimes 18 and 20 hours days, without any weekends for several months. I earned my GED and college degree here in the US while working full time. Now I sit as one of the top Executives in a Vegas-style mega hotel/casino, guiding 1400+ employees, and nearly 1/2 that number of vendors, in a daily grueling hell's kitchen of 12 hours days, 6 days a week.
I make around $100k, but it almost all disappears helping my family in my original country, as I'm the eldest of 9 borthers and sisters, whom are living under an annoying dictatorship, that prides it self of the number of slums it has. They've came to visit here, and realized that they cannot stay and practice their faith without being under the microscope of all clandestine bodies, as 9/11 has classified my faith as a target for all security forces, so they went back home, at least to be next to the elder family members in their old age, and practice their faith with liberty. At least the police state there has the same faith, so it is easier to easier to communicate with them.
I read this post trying to get a boost of energy to run for grad/B-school, and I'm deeply saddened many times.
Once by the cinical atmosphere and the non-ethical bragging.
Once again saddened by the high cost of such education.
I am saddened also by the reality that I've crossed the age of 43, and there is no chance for me to continue in any of the top B-schools, as recruiting a 32 years old student will make him/her a veteran among the class.
I'm disappointed at the country-club mentality that is a major part of top B-schools in the US, as I sit in reality and see that it does not take more than a two years to complety lose this "fratrnity" in the daily business grind, and meeting old classmates, or doing business with them, becomes a liability more than an asset.
The reality that I see it, is that everyone who approches me, wants me to approve his request, without any care for my faith, creed, school, color, race, martial status, or thing mentioned here. They just want their own business done and that is it. Nobody cares about my background, and even if I went to a grad school (which I wish for, as I dearly charish education) no one would care.
Thanks for the opinions in this post. It is an eye-opener.
